Still No Sympathy

What's objectionable about this 19-year old Plagiarist is not so much that TS Eliot (kind of) gives her a free pass, or that Dan Brown and JK Rowling wrote about premises that were previously discussed, but rather that she actually use the word "internalized" to explain herself.

And in doing so, she not only gained a little notoriety for herself, but she's colored the general-public's opinion each of Harvard students, Indian writers, and probably large advances on book deals to teenagers.

My reference is this week's edition of "The Onion". They tear this woman to PIECES in it. You know, Shakespeare was correct when he said there is truth in humor.

And if you studied Science, Engineering, and Economics like me, TS Eliot is pretty much a big nobody. I think the engineering students must have flung rubberbands at him as he wrote under his tree. I mean we've heard of him, but he doesn't make our mouths water in the way that, for example, geothermal air conditioning systems do.

I do agree that the Million Little Pieces wasn't anywhere near as scandalous as Oprah made it out to be. My opinion on that debacle is that Oprah was more embarassed that she didn't fact-check. Not only did the author have the right to alter or exxagerate events, he also had a CLEAR DISCLAIMER. No wonder The Onion didn't pick on him.

I don't think Dan Brown or JK Rowling's acts of internalization have ever prompted an admission of the same. In fact I know they have been put to the test, and allegations crumbled.

Moreover, their behavior doesn't speak to a budding generation whose parents were hard-working immigrants in this country.

That was the Harvard girl's big, big mistake. She lost the support of her base.

Sadly, my favorite Indian at the moment still has to be Hank Azaria's caricature of the goofy convenience store owner.
