Bushwick Lighters Up

It was a good night in Brooklyn.

There were five of us tonight with very different life stories. Most of us from completely different backgrounds.

What brought us together was laughter. Good humor, candlelight, Thai food, and red wine.

If we lived in Manhattan, the night wouldn't have happened this way. We'd have had loftier expectations, the apartment would have been smaller. There would have been reservations and cabs and a general not-okayness with roughing it a bit.

I like it when complete strangers meet and within moments are talking about their lives. Ambitions, challenges, greatest fears. Asking each other questions without fear of assumption. It's one of my favorite things, and more than justifies any effort I put into plan-making.

We were sitting there being honest, completely honest, with eachother, and nice things happened. Not amazing things. Just nice, natural things.

The shy yet striking blonde was made to blush a few times, and was teased by the heavily tatooed blue-collar ninja of a roommate. Her laughter brought him comfort. Their interaction made the rest of us smile. I got to interact with 'the sisters'... kind of as their adopted brother. We're one anothers' biggest fans. Models opened up and said they needed more substance; heavyweight academics opened up and admitted to being scared. It's important to have friends like that.

Tonight we learned just a bit why they call it the People's Republic of Brooklyn.
